The Glycine Airman has an authentic connection to the golden age of American aviation. During the Vietnam era, watches from the Airman family became closely associated with pilots and servicemen who valued their legibility, rugged construction, and ability to track time across multiple zones. These were practical instruments made for demanding lives—tough watches worn by tougher men. The SST “Pumpkin” pushes that utilitarian foundation into distinctly 1970s territory. Its large EPSA case, vivid orange 24-hour internal bezel, twin crowns, and supersonic-aircraft case-back emblem give it unmistakable presence. Despite the bold color, every element remains functional and rooted in the needs of long-distance aviation. This example is especially compelling because it retains the details that define the model: its original radial case brushing, rare profiled crystal, matching tritium patina, fully functional hacking mechanism, and saturated orange internal bezel.
In May 2024, I personally completed a full service of the original AS 1903 automatic movement. The movement was fully disassembled, cleaned, inspected, lubricated using industry-standard lubricants, reassembled, regulated, and functionally tested. No movement components were replaced. The movement is operating reliably, including its quick-set date and original hacking-pin mechanism. The original tritium in the hands was stabilized from behind with clear binder to preserve its existing patina and prevent further flaking. No modern luminous material was added. A new case-back gasket was installed. The original crown gaskets, made from a durable polymer used in many compressor-style cases of the period, remained supple and serviceable; they were retained and relubricated. The watch passed a 6-bar pressure test following service. This is a record of its performance when tested, not a guarantee of continued water resistance. Given the watch’s age and rarity, I recommend keeping it away from water. The watch retains its original EPSA case and case back, dial, hands and tritium lume, orange internal bezel, rare profiled crystal, both crowns, hacking pin, and AS 1903 movement. It is fitted with a new military-style canvas NATO strap.
