The Astrographic is Zodiac at its most imaginative. Transparent discs carry the hour and minute indicators across the dial without visible support, while a red dot appears to orbit independently at the center. The result is less like a conventional watch display and more like a small mechanical instrument from an imagined future. The “Tiger’s Eye” treatment makes this example especially evocative of the 1970s. Its shifting brown and gold tones recall the chatoyant gemstone from which it takes its name, giving warmth and depth to an otherwise stark, space-age design. Behind the visual theater is the Zodiac Cal. 88D, a Swiss automatic high-beat movement operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. Its ten-beat-per-second frequency gives the floating seconds indicator a fittingly fluid motion. The original Zodiac-signed bracelet completes the design with a dramatic taper from the broad case attachment toward the clasp.
In August 2025, I personally completed a full service of the original Zodiac Cal. 88D automatic high-beat movement. The movement was fully disassembled, cleaned, inspected, lubricated using industry-standard lubricants, reassembled, regulated, and functionally tested. The original sealed mainspring barrel was replaced with a newly manufactured, serviceable mainspring-and-barrel assembly. Cal. 88D movements were originally fitted with sealed barrels that cannot be conventionally opened for routine cleaning and lubrication. The replacement allows the assembly to be properly maintained during future services rather than retaining progressively degraded lubricant. No other movement components were replaced. The movement is performing excellently, including its timekeeping and automatic winding. All case gaskets were replaced, and the original Zodiac-signed crown was rebuilt. The watch passed a 3-bar pressure test following service. This records its performance when tested but does not guarantee continued water resistance. The watch retains its original stainless-steel case and case back, Tiger’s Eye dial, transparent display discs and printed indicators, luminous material, mineral crystal, signed crown, Cal. 88D movement, and dramatically tapered Zodiac-signed bracelet. Service replacements are limited to the mainspring-and-barrel assembly and gaskets.
